Description

Detailed information

![Tectonic logo](https://cdn.modrinth.com/data/lWDHr9jE/images/a9e7b74ceae662769f011826b17c5311cfd9905d.png) Welcome to **Tectonic**, a world generation project that aims to transform how terrain is shaped. ## Important Notes Tectonic's supported versions right now are **1.21.1** and **26.1**. Other versions will not have issues fixed on them. <details> <summary>Biome Mod Compatibility</summary> **Most Biome Mods (BOP, RU, NS, BWG)** Tectonic is compatible with mods that rely on Terrablender or Biolith to add their biomes to worldgen. This includes Biomes O Plenty, Regions Unexplored, Nature's Spirit, and more. **Terralith** Tectonic has a special version with Terralith compatibility. This version is shipped in the mod version of Tectonic, but it is available as a standalone datapack [here](https://modrinth.com/datapack/terratonic). **CliffTree** On 1.20, Tectonic and Clifftree are **not** compatible. On 1.21, Tectonic needs some small tweaks to work with CliffTree. These tweaks are shipped with the mod version of Tectonic, but they are available as a datapack [here](https://modrinth.com/datapack/clifftree-tectonic). </details> ## Features The mod version of Tectonic has a config for editing many of the following features. Tectonic v3 has a config screen, making it easier than ever to know what certain fields do and to configure them in-game. --- ### Continents and Islands In Tectonic v3, terrain forms into continent-like landmasses. Continents will generate thousands to tens of thousands of blocks wide, tailored to account for the project's massive mountain ranges and new terrain types. In the oceans between continents you'll find relatively smaller "islands", ranging up to around a thousand blocks across. These islands use vanilla's mountain terrain shaping, now making it possible to find traditional mountain rings. With Terralith installed, these islands spawn Calderas and Volcanoes! ![](https://cdn.modrinth.com/data/lWDHr9jE/images/822d0e20a35cedbc257742ae4a2f52b783992c2c.png) --- ### Deeper Oceans Oceans are much deeper than they are in vanilla, with deep oceans even extending into the deepslate layer! Deep oceans in particular have more varied terrain, featuring overhangs and valleys. If the mod version is installed, vanilla Ocean Monuments will generate deeper to compensate for the deeper oceans. --- ### Mountain Ranges The biggest highlight of Tectonic's terrain is the massive mountain ranges. They can stretch for tens of thousands of blocks, going high enough to approach the build limit! ![Mountain range](https://cdn.modrinth.com/data/lWDHr9jE/images/e312ff19967d89e3fd79f2d5b78270a44fb9f216.png) --- ### Underground Rivers In mountainous terrain that is too towering to allow regular river generation, terrain gets carved for rivers to continue underground. These link right up to the regular rivers, so there's no interruption in exploring along rivers. These rivers vary vastly in size and shape. If the mod version is installed, these will have increased glow lichen and rare areas with lanterns! ![Underground river](https://cdn.modrinth.com/data/lWDHr9jE/images/202e23ab60b9494e4034db723900eb37acc5a60f.png) --- ### Lava Tunnels *Very* deep underground, you can find a deeper variant of underground rivers with different shaping and lava instead of water. ![Lava tunnel](https://cdn.modrinth.com/data/lWDHr9jE/images/8f348455fe615d6d7a1f727e3b6b7e10fb21c70a.png) --- ### Jungle Pillars Some jungles feature massive pillars that can extend upwards of a hundred blocks tall! ![Jungle pillars](https://cdn.modrinth.com/data/lWDHr9jE/images/d5f4cd12359d19c318316be72a0319d6d7ebb23b.png) --- ### Canyons Some badlands will generate *very* large canyons, making them a spectacle to find and travel through. ![](https://cdn.modrinth.com/data/lWDHr9jE/images/84fd0dac6cc7d2935344bc7ccdbbbe017e6b6aa8.png) --- ### Dunes Most deserts will generate smooth, rolling dunes. ![](https://cdn.modrinth.com/data/lWDHr9jE/images/5cf544329f978e3db4c49eba296e1e77a787f714.png) --- ### Plateaus In some areas, towering 2-3 tiered plateaus will generate. These plateaus will sometimes have smoother "ramps" to make exploration in survival more accessible. Badlands also feature isolated plateaus, not directly bound to nearby rivers. ![](https://cdn.modrinth.com/data/lWDHr9jE/images/0e2d3bd5969fb17a3ec459e7717a860fce16fb37.png) --- ### Valleys While plateaus usually elevate plateau biomes, some Cherry Groves and Pale Gardens have the plateaus surround the biome, turning the biome into a valley. ![](https://cdn.modrinth.com/data/lWDHr9jE/images/39542628a574d52271c31f70645f8fdda381fa83.png) --- ### Wetlands Some forest, jungle and taiga biomes generate very close to sea level and generate frequent ponds and lakes. ![](https://cdn.modrinth.com/data/lWDHr9jE/images/13a3c19f29d1593a4c75c4ad37976a3aa1cc0b01.png) ---

These make terrain look better with low noise scale values (especially on mountain slopes and oceansides), but aren't compatible with C2ME's worldgen hardware acceleration.

# Tectonic v3: The Everest Update The largest Tectonic update ever is here. A full rewrite, a plethora of new terrain types, and improvements to almost all existing features. This is the Everest update. Made with love by Apollo. 💜 --- ## Additions **Config Overhaul** *[Mod Only]* There is now a config screen for viewing and changing Tectonic options in-game! Every option has an explanatory tooltip and its default value displayed. The tooltips replace the comments in the config file to reduce clutter. This also comes with **16** new config options. Please see the config screen for more information on these. --- **Continents and Islands** Terrain in v2 was split roughly 50/50 between land and ocean, with no coherent shape for either. In v3, terrain now forms into more coherent "continents". Continents will generate thousands to tens of thousands of blocks wide, designed for Tectonic's massive mountain ranges and new terrain types. In the oceans between continents, you'll find relatively smaller "islands". These range from a few hundred blocks to around a thousand blocks across. These islands use vanilla's mountain terrain shaping, now making it possible to find traditional mountain rings. *With Terralith installed, these islands have Volcanoes and Calderas!* *[Mod Only]* A config option to remove the random normal ice in Frozen Oceans has been added to help with ocean exploration in the new bigger oceans. --- **Jungle Pillars** Some jungle biomes will generate towering pillars covered in vegetation stretching upwards of a hundred blocks high! --- **Biome Valleys** Sometimes, you will find cherry groves and pale gardens nested inside of a valley! --- **Badlands Canyons** Some badlands will feature massive canyons, carved around rivers. --- **Badlands Buttes** Other badlands will generate isolated plateaus in an otherwise flat, desolate region. These are a perfect place to find red sand, which could be difficult to get in older versions. --- **Wetlands** Some forests, taigas, and jungles will feature very flat terrain with frequent ponds and small lakes. --- **Rolling Hills** Some plains, flower forest, and ice spikes will feature very smooth rolling hills. --- **Chunk Blending** Tectonic v2 worlds will blend into Tectonic v3 worlds (somewhat) smoothly! There will be 1-5 block seams at the border between old and new chunks, but it's significantly better than the 100-200 block borders you could get without it. --- **CliffTree Compatibility** On 1.21.x, Tectonic now natively supports CliffTree! Just install both as mods and you're set. --- ## Changes **Rougher Terrain** Tectonic used to smoothen out the terrain, removing the staircasing/"lerp" that is present in vanilla. This has been reverted. This has been done for a few reasons: - Windswept terrain better integrates with the rest of the world. - Slopes are easier to build on, with median areas at each staircase step. - Grove generation around mountains is improved. - Strange horizontal strips parallel to mountain faces are far less noticeable. - The underlying noise that makes Tectonic work is better obfuscated, making terrain less predictable. --- **Underground Rivers** Underground rivers got a massive overhaul in the Everest update, much closer matching my standalone Underground Rivers mod. - Terrain inside of rivers varies significantly more. This includes varying sizes and shapes. - Transitions between normal and underground rivers have been improved. The transition point has been moved further from mountains to make the terrain drop less steep, and the varying sizes mean the ceiling is no longer consistently super flat at entrances. - Entrances are significantly taller than before, sometimes being more blocks tall than wide. - Pillars are significantly more common. - Significantly reduced aquifer issues at the sides of the rivers. - *[Mod Only]* Increased glow lichen rates from Tectonic v1 have returned. - *[Mod Only]* Added back Lantern Rivers from Tectonic v1. They are now a rare feature in underground rivers in any biome, not a biome themselves. Yes, this can be disabled in the config. --- **Lava Tunnels** The deep lava sibling of underground rivers got some love! - Lava tunnels are noticeably rarer than before. They still generate quite a bit, but not as pervasively. - The size has been significantly shrunken down. They now have rougher, narrower walls, smaller ceilings, and less safe ground. Proceed with caution. - The direction of tunnels twists and turns more often, making the underlying noise less visible and sightlines more obscured. --- **Plateaus** The plateau terrain from v2 has been completely ripped out. The new plateaus can be 2 or 3-tiered, with occasional gentle "onboarding ramps" for easier survival exploration. --- **Desert Dunes** Dunes have been rewritten *again* in the version, looking even more like actual dunes than before. --- **Oceans** Ocean terrain is significantly more varied than before. Deep oceans in particular have seen special terrain introduced, causing overhangs and trenches to generate! --- **Swamps** Swamp bones sit much closer to sea level, generating much more like in vanilla. With Terralith installed, inland swamps near mountains have been removed. --- **Windswept Savannas** There should no longer be large, flat regions of the Windswept Savanna biome. --- **Oceanside Cliffs** The overhangs have been removed. With Terralith installed, these cliffs will actually generate the mod's special cliff biomes. --- **World Presets** *[Mod Only]* Removed the Amplified and Large Biomes presets from the world type selector. - Amplified has never worked with Tectonic, either completely ignoring it or having unintended behavior. - Large Biomes is redundant due to the new temperate/vegetation related config options. This also drastically reduces the amount of duplicated code needed for the mod to fully function. --- **Deep Dark** The Deep Dark biome is now capped at y32.

## Additions - **Added chunk blending.** You can now upgrade v2 worlds to v3 and have the game smooth out the transition between terrain. - Please note that there are **1-2 block seams** at the chunk border. This is unfortunately unavoidable. ## Changes - Updated the config screen. Every option now has an explanatory tooltip and its default value. - Removed the Amplified and Large Biomes presets from the world type selector. - Amplified has never worked with Tectonic, either completely ignoring it or having unintended behavior. - Large Biomes is redundant due to the new `___ Scale` config options. This also drastically reduces the amount of duplicated code needed for the mod to fully function. - The floor of underground rivers near entrances has been raised a few blocks. - Smoothened the transition between rivers and swamps. - Made stony shores steeper. ## Fixes - Decreased how much land biomes seep into the oceans on coastlines. - Fixed most instances of Deep Dark leaking into underground rivers. - Fixed aquifer issues on the underground river floor. - Fixed plateau biome (e.g. meadow) generating next to rivers with Terralith installed. - Fixed the Increased Height option not working with Terralith installed.

# Tectonic v3 Beta 1 This is the first beta of Tectonic v3, the second rewrite in Tectonic's history. Please take note of the following missing features: - **Terrain Blending** (will be introduced later) - Terralith compatibility (will return later) - Large Biomes compatibility (will return later) - Continents compatibility (may not return later) - Lava Rivers (may not return later) ## New Features **Continents and Islands** Terrain in v2 was split roughly 50/50 between land and ocean, with no coherent shape for either. In v3, terrain now forms into more coherent "continents". Continents will generate thousands to tens of thousands of blocks wide to account for the massive mountain ranges and new terrain types. In the oceans between continents you'll find relatively smaller "islands", ranging up to around a thousand blocks across. These islands use vanilla's mountain terrain shaping, now making it possible to find traditional mountain rings. **New Terrain Types** Tectonic now features several new terrain shaping types to spice up your travels. - Plateaus While Tectonic v2 did feature three-tiered plateaus, v3 polishes this feature up significantly. There are now both two and three-tiered plateaus, with both sometimes having smoother slopes to climb up them in survival more easily. - Valleys While plateaus usually elevate plateau biomes, some Cherry Groves and Pale Gardens have the plateaus surround the biome, turning the biome into a valley. - Wetlands Some forest, jungle and taiga biomes generate very close to sea level and generate frequent ponds and lakes. - Canyons Some badlands form massive canyons with rivers running through them. - Buttes Badlands that don't generate canyons will instead have low terrain with occasional isolated plateaus. - Hills Some plains, flower forest and ice spike biomes will feature smooth rolling hills. - Dunes Dunes have been overhauled in v3, looking much closer to the new rolling hill terrain. - Pillars Some jungles feature massive pillars that can extend upwards of a hundred blocks tall, reminiscent of the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in China. - Oceans Deep oceans are much more varied than before, having dynamic heights and sometimes generating overhangs and deep trenches. **Config Overhaul** The config has gotten another overhaul, with several new options. On top of that, there is finally a **config screen**! ## Changes **Improved Underground Rivers** Underground rivers have received a full rewrite, largely based off of my standalone [Underground Rivers](modrinth.com/mod/underground-rivers) mod. - Entrances are significantly taller than before, usually being more blocks tall than wide. - Pillars are significantly more common. - _[Mod Only]_ Increased glow lichen rates from Tectonic v1 have returned. **Seaside Cliff Changes** - Oceanside cliff overhangs have been removed. **Less Smooth Terrain** Vanilla's noise used to roughen up terrain that has the inadvertent affect of making sloped terrain "staircase" has been reintroduced. This has been done for a few reasons: - Windswept terrain better integrates with the rest of the world. - Slopes are easier to build on, with median areas at each staircase step. - The underlying noise that makes Tectonic work is better obfuscated, making terrain less predictable. **Improved Windswept Savannas** Windswept Savannas have received a significant upgrade. While in previous versions you could find sizable areas of flat areas of the biome, that should no longer happen.

Jump update from v2.2 to v2.4! ## v2.3.x changes - Fixed an issue where Badlands biomes above y256 were covered in Orange Terracotta. - Reworked desert dune generation to be a lot more common and more "dune-y". - Reshaped mountains slightly. The transition from mountains to oceans should be smoother, and the max heights vary a bit more. ## v2.4.0 changes - Updated to 1.21. Unlike previous datapack versions, this one is *just* for the latest version. - Dropped backwards compatibility with Tectonic v1. This means if you try to *directly* update from Tectonic v1.x to Tectonic v2.4.0 or above, you won't be able to. You will have to take a pit stop at another version like v2.2.2. - **Other world types work!** Amplified won't work, but other world types like Superflat and Large Biomes will. - **Added configuration options.** Since datapacks can't have real config files like mods, you will need to edit the pack manually. Don't worry, however; open `configuring.md` in the pack files to pull up a guide to configuring everything in the datapack that is configurable in the mod.

This isn't an April Fools joke, I promise. **The Config Update** - Added a proper config to the mod version at `config/tectonic.json`, with three categories to play around with. - Legacy: Controls the legacy mode, which was introduced earlier in v2.1 to allow safe upgrading of Tectonic v1 worlds. - Features: Allows some features of the mod to be toggled on and off. This includes deeper oceans, underground rivers, lava rivers, and desert dunes. - Experimental: Adds some extra configuration options just for fun. It includes the following: - An increased height setting, which will increase the overworld's build and generation limits to y640. - A terrain scale setting, which will vertically scale the terrain by a given factor. Combined with the increased height setting, you can make mountains stretch to over 500 blocks tall. - A horizontal mountain scale setting, which horizontally scales mountains (how shocking). This can make mountains thicker and more spread out. - On top of these three categories, there's a setting for if the mod is enabled. Tectonic will lie dormant and not affect the game if this is turned on. There's been a lot of backend work going on to make the update possible. As a result, there's been some merges and splits of mod jars. a. The multi-loader 1.20.1 and 1.19.2 versions have been split into separate Fabric and Forge versions. b. The Fabric 1.19.3-1.20.1 and Fabric 1.20.2+ versions have been merged into a single version. - When deeper oceans are enabled, ocean monuments will generate 30 blocks lower than in vanilla. - Fixed an issue where Badlands biomes above y256 were covered in Orange Terracotta. - Reworked desert dune generation to be a lot more common and more "dune-y".

**Several fixes!** - Fixed Large Biomes/Superflat not functioning (All mod versions) - Fixed Forge 1.20.2+ crashing on startup - Fixed an issue with hardcoded seeds (again) on Forge 1.18.2 - Tweaked oceanside cliff generation - Even less snow should generate than before. There's still a very small amount, which is fixed if you have Lithostitched installed. - Cliffs generally will generally stop closer to oceans, preventing too much land biome "spilling" into ocean terrain - In addition to the previous change, ocean biomes will generate farther into cliffs near sea level, further reducing spillage - The bottom layer of cliff carving has been raised, preventing weirdness with ocean biome terrain generating higher than where cliffs carved down to - Steep cliffs similar to the ones in vanilla will also generate alongside the "carved" cliffs - Signficantly reduced the amount of Lush Caves leaking onto the surface near underground river entrances - Removed invalid license file (All mod versions) - Removed discord link (All fabric versions)

### This is a BETA! I cannot guarantee that updating worlds to the beta or out of the beta is 100% safe. Make backups! ### Terralith support and the Large Biomes datapack currently do not exist for this beta. - **Massively altered the way the biome layout works.** While the explanation of what changed is technical, the bottom line is that **other biome mods should have next to no issues with Tectonic!** The issues with biomes being in the completely wrong terrain has been abolished, so mountain peak biome on flat terrain or river biomes plastered on top of mountain ranges when using Terrablender are gone. - **Revised the terrain shaping to be less flat.** While the large expanses of flat terrain still exist, there should be more interesting terrain breaking that up. You'll now find new terrain shapes like multi-tiered plateaus, and windswept terrain (with more terrain shapes coming in future versions). Don't worry though; special terrain features from prior versions like underground rivers and desert dunes have carried over. - **Refreshed cave generation.** Caves are rarer yet overall bigger. There's also now a deep variant of underground rivers with lava instead of water! - **Removed all Tectonic biomes and improvements to vanilla biomes.** This is for multiple reasons, but it comes down to this: It makes the mod more compatible with mods that add biomes and change existing ones, and some of these removed biome improvements from Tectonic have been and/or will be carried over into my other mods like Not Just Biomes. **Tectonic biomes remain in the files to keep old worlds from corrupting.**

Other than bug fixes, this will likely be the last version of Tectonic until Minecraft 1.20 releases. My time and effort is going to be spent on other projects. **Additions** - Added stone generation to steeper areas of the terrain. In Savannas and Jungles, this is packed mud instead. **Changes** - Sugarcane placement has been increased where sand generates, and the amount of sugarcane per patch on average has increased. - This change has been made to combat the fact that biomes in Tectonic without sand generation do not have sugarcane at all. - Clay now generates in rivers and is not just limited to Lush Caves and Swamps. - Fixed an issue with strange riverbed generation in modded biomes. These will now use vanilla's disks of sand, gravel, and clay instead of just dirt.

First major update! With this update comes four new biomes and many changes, big and small. This will also be the first version of Tectonic to release for both 1.18.2 and 1.19 at the same time. Have fun! **Additions** - Huge hoodoos in the Badlands Spires biome - Moved the custom birch trees to the Evergreen Forest and Old Growth Evergreen Forest biome - Improved the Birch Forest biome to make it look a bit more like the concept art from Minecraft Live 2021 - Cliffs made of Calcite and Diorite in the White Cliffs biome - Stumps in some forest biome, that can sometimes have moss carpets on them - More oak tree variants **Changes** - Major technical changes to mountain generation. Mountains should be about 50% more common. - Changes to terrain shaping, mainly shifting around where highlands and flat terrain generates. - Made oceans deeper - Made cliffs beside the ocean only sometimes generate overhangs - Added pillar generation inside underground rivers - Removed the Ancient River biome from generation. - The biome still exists in the files to ensure worlds from older versions don’t break. - Improved the generation and placement of the Desert Dunes, Island, Lagoon, and Autumn Forest biomes - The Island and Lagoon biomes should be about twice as common. - The Desert Dunes and Autumn Forest biomes should be about as common as they were before. - Reverted a change made in v1.0.3 that made rivers smoother. - Attempted to improve aquifer generation around oceanside cliffs. - Several other technical changes and tweaks.
